March 2017

President's Report

Wow! Is all I can say about the last few months.  We’ve had an exciting start to 2017.   Are you ready to lean in?  NAHU and NMAHU are available to help you with information, education and representation.

The NAHU Capital Conference from February 13-15th was a great success and had the most attendees at Capital Conference ever!  There were a 1000 members who attended and many of them had visits with their state representatives.  Our local NMAHU members had an opportunity to visit with all the NM Senators and Representatives. The conversations went well and most understood that the role of the agent/broker is paramount in assisting New Mexican businesses and individuals with education and information on how to navigate their health insurance options.

Our NMAHU Day on the Hill in Santa Fe on February 16th was very informative.  We had a carrier panel with NMHIX, NMHC, PHP, UHC, NMMIP and BenefitSource.  The information they provided was very useful.  If you missed it, you missed out on a lot.  We’ve also recently sent out an Operation Shout during the current NM Legislative session.  Did you know that bills HB101 and HB575 PUBLIC PEACE, HEALTH, SAFETY & WELFARE HEALTH SECURITY PLAN ANALYSIS ACTwent all the way to the Senate Finance Committee?  Seems that more and more legislators are willing to sign onto a bill to analyze how a single-payer healthcare system would work in NM.  For more information about this legislative session, contact our Legislative chair, Leonel Zia.

Our NMAHU chapter is busy with educational events and partnered with Big I to provide a 15 CE’s at our 2-day event on March 29th and 30th.  I hope you didn't miss out on this yearly event.  It was a great place for education and networking.  We also highlighted our Operation Engage program and will provide a donation to First Nations Health Center. We made over $130.00 at our March Symposium for this very important cause!

If you are looking for a certification in Benefits Account Management, Consumer Directed HealthCare, HIPAA Privacy and Security or Individual Health Insurance, NAHU has several certification courses. And, when you’re done, you get a logo to add to your marketing items and email signature.

For more information on certifications go to:

And speaking of marketing! NAHU members have online access to Consumer Guides and Brochures for clients, a Health coverage database, wellness videos, Educational and Legislative webinars.

From March 14 – 28, 2017, Get $50.00 off your National dues.  Additionally, March 1 through May 31, anyone joining NAHU by bank draft or renewing by bank draft will be entered in a drawing for $100 gift cards. NAHU will award 16 gift cards with a grand prize of $500. If you know someone in the industry who is not a NAHU member yet, now is a good time to ask them to join.

If you need more information on any of these topics you can reach out to me or anyone on our NMAHU 2016/2017 board. Contact us at

I look forard to serving you as we complete the 2016/2017 NMAHU year. If you would like to become involved in a committee or as a board member, please contact us.  We are currently preparing for the 2017/2018 NMAHU year and need more members to help us move our organization forward.

Thank you for your membership in NMAHU.

Community Service

Savers Fund Drive

Spring is a great time to clean out closets and garage. This year, instead of simply boxing things up, bring them to our Saver’s Fund Drive.

Drop off date is April 28 from 12 to 2:00 p.m. at Hospital Corporation of America, 7471 Pan American Freeway NE in Albuquerque. We’ll be in the parking lot with a couple of trucks. If you are not able to make this date, call Barbara Lardner at 505-362-2580 to arrange a pick up.

Saver’s accepts books, small furniture, shoes, clothes, dishes, small appliances, toys, games, CD’s, VCR’s, shoes and athletic equipment. For this fund drive, we will make a donation to First Nations Community Healthsource in Albuquerque. If you have questions about an item or need additional information, please call Barbara Lardner at 505-362-2580.

Go green and recycle the smart way this spring!

Our influence is greater when we act and speak together. NMAHU is participating with other chapters nationwide in the NAHU Education Foundation’s Operation Engage to support our community health clinics and solicit financial support. Community health clinics are a critical part of America’s healthcare system. Millions of Americans remain uninsured. The nation’s more than 1,250 Federally qualified Health Centers are the ultimate safety net for these individuals, providing primary care, dental care and more through 9,000 service delivery sites. While these centers receive substantial federal dollars, those grants represent less than 20% of their total budgets. (Medicaid payments represent another 40%). These clinics need our help.

NMAHU is proud to announce that for 2016-2017, we have elected to offer supportive efforts towards First Nations Community Healthsource in Albuquerque.

First Nations Community HealthSource is an urban Indian health center, health care for the homeless clinic and community health center in southeast Albuquerque, New Mexico. The center’s mission is to provide culturally appropriate and comprehensive health servcies that address the physical, social, emotional and spiritual well being of American Indians and other underserved populations in Albuquerque and the surrounding tribes.

If you're interested in being apart of Operation Engage, please contact Julia Moore at

What's New?

Call for volunteers! As we go through the next phase of health care / health insurance reform, we can say one thing for sure, things will change. Our clients will need us now just as they always have, to help them figure out what products will best meet their needs.  Those of us who have been in the industry for 20+ years have served our clients through many different changes.  We have learned and then taught about COBRA, HIPAA and of course PPACA.   Obviously there have been many more changes but I am “preaching to the choir”.  My point is that our clients will continue to need our services and we need to keep up with the changes so we can provide appropriate information to them.  There are many resources out there but NAHU is the premier source for information for brokers.  We offer great opportunities for Professional Development and for networking, as well as legislative advocacy.

Our State and Local chapters (NMAHU and NNMAHU) are working hard to bring value to our members. And we need the help of our members to do a good job.  Please consider joining a committee and getting more involved in this effort.  We understand that everyone is busy and does not have a lot of time to devote to a volunteer organization.  We do have commitments for many chair positions already, so what we are looking for is committee members to assist those chairs.  One of our goals is to get our message out to people who are not in the aforementioned choir.  And the more people we have spreading the message the louder our voice is.

If you would like to join a committee or chair a position on either the state or local board, please contact me at
